Twinkle Toes

Lexie and Gavin have been asking for a while if they could learn how to ice skate. So last night, Danny had a law school activity for families at an ice rink, and all their wishes came true. I love to ice skate. I spent lots of time in junior high at the rec center ice rink as a kid. So I was excited to try it out with my own kids. Lexie and Gavin realized ice skating was hard, but with a lot of persistence they could improve. The rink has these great supports for learning so you fall less.Gavin had a hard time keeping the weight on his feet, with the slipperiness he wanted to put all the weight on the support. He wanted to move his feet like he walks and they kept crossing each other or just plain slipping out from under him! At first he was frustrated, but then he found a new charge for it and kept at it. By the end of our evening, he was speeding around the rink.
Lexie really enjoyed skating, and can't wait to go back! She was able to get balanced and work on some techniques. By the end, she put away the skate-support and gave skating on her own a try! She went around the rink two times by herself before they closed.

Cole really wanted to skate too, but he was too small. That didn't deter him, and he went walking right out on the ice a couple of times in his shoes. The manager didn't recommend skating with a child in case you fall, but I did briefly give him a ride so he could be out there too. Maybe in a couple of years when they make skates small enough!
